INSTALLATION GUIDE

Windows

Difficulty: Easy Estimated time: 10 minutes Last updated: 10 April 2026

Got an old Windows PC gathering dust? Turn it into a dedicated signage player in ten minutes. We configure Chrome or Edge to start automatically in kiosk mode when the computer is switched on. Viewers never see the Windows desktop.

What you need

  • A PC running Windows 10 or 11
  • An HDMI cable to your screen
  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge installed (either works)
  • An internet connection

Prepare Windows

  1. 1

    Create a dedicated user account

Open Settings → Accounts → Other users → Add account. Create a local account called "webtv" with no password. This account should not have administrator rights and will only be used for kiosk mode.

  2. 2

    Enable automatic sign-in

You want the computer to sign in automatically on startup without showing the sign-in screen. Open the Run dialog (Windows + R), type netplwiz and press Enter. Untick "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select the webtv account and click OK.

  3. 3

Prevent Windows Update restarts during operating hours

Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Change active hours. Set the active hours to when your screen should be running, so that Windows does not restart in the middle of the lunchtime rush.

Set up Chrome in kiosk mode

  1. 1

    Create a shortcut to Chrome

Right-click on the desktop and choose New → Shortcut. For the location, enter the full command for Chrome plus the kiosk flags:

    "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --kiosk --noerrdialogs --disable-infobars --no-first-run --no-default-browser-check --disable-features=TranslateUI --disable-session-crashed-bubble https://displayflow.app/play

If Chrome is installed in a different location, adjust the path. On 32-bit Windows it is C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe.

Name the shortcut "DisplayFlow Kiosk" and click Finish.

  2. 2

    Test the shortcut

Double-click the shortcut. Chrome should open in full screen without any address bar, tabs or menus. If you see normal Chrome, something has gone wrong with the command line — double-check that you copied the whole line, including --kiosk.

To exit kiosk mode, press Alt+F4 on the keyboard. In production you will want to disconnect the keyboard entirely.

  3. 3

Add the shortcut to the Startup folder

Now we make Chrome start automatically at sign-in. Press Windows + R, type

    shell:startup

and press Enter. A folder opens. Copy your DisplayFlow Kiosk shortcut into it.

The next time the computer starts, it will automatically sign in as the webtv user and start Chrome in kiosk mode.

Edge instead of Chrome

If you prefer Edge, exactly the same process applies. The difference is the command line:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --kiosk --edge-kiosk-type=fullscreen --no-first-run https://displayflow.app/play

Edge has a built-in kiosk type via the flag --edge-kiosk-type=fullscreen which can be more stable than Chrome for long-running operation. Both work — choose the one you already have installed.

Pair your screen

  1. 1 Chrome opens and loads https://displayflow.app/play. You will see a 6-digit code on the screen.
  2. 2 Go to your DisplayFlow dashboard on a computer or phone.
  3. 3 Click "Add screen" and enter the code.
  4. 4 Give the screen a name and choose a location. Done.
